José Roberto Durán-Félix, piano
Mr. Durán began his piano studies with Carmelita Rivas de Cota in 1995. At age 12 he was accepted into the music program at Universidad de Sonora to the class of Prof. Pedro Vega. In 2007 Mr. Durán made his solo debut performing at Teatro Emiliana de Zubeldia and Teatro de la Ciudad, in Hermosillo, Mexico. He has performed in Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, and in the northern part of Mexico for several national and international piano festivals.
Mr. Durán has been twice awarded the coveted Artistic Development Grant (2008, 2012) by the Instituto Sonorense de Cultura. The first grant based on his research and performance of the music by Alexander Scriabin. The second grant on the virtuosic piano music of Schubert, Liszt, and Ravel. In addition, Mr. Durán has also been awarded the Municipal Culture Youth Prize (2009) for his series of lecture recitals in public and private schools. Mr. Durán has given the Colorado premiere of Emiliana de Zubeldia’s Sonata en Tres Estancias and Once Tientos para piano.
Mr. Durán has collaborated with various orchestras and chamber groups such as the CSU Symphony Orchestra and smaller ensembles in Northern Colorado. As recipient of numerous scholarships and the Accompanying Fund, Mr. Durán served as a staff accompanist at Colorado State University. Most recently, Mr. Durán has collaborated with several school choirs in northern Colorado, offered lecture recitals in both private and public schools in Fort Collins and the Denver area, and has served as guest lecturer at El Sistema - Colorado.
Mr. Durán holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. Among his principal teachers are Pedro Vega, Silvana Santinelli, and Vladimir Stoupel. In addition, he has taken masterclasses from Kim Hayashi, David Gomez, Davide Cabassi, Hamilton Tescarollo, Anne-Marie McDermott, Natasha Kislenko, Ilya Sinaisky, Andrew Harley, Jeffrey Cohen, and Wael Farouk.
Mr. Durán currently maintains an active teaching studio, Duran Piano Studio, has served as a collaborative pianist at Fort Lewis College, as pianist and organist at the First United Methodist Church, and as choir pianist at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango.
